The Twenties: Are You Ready to Roar?
As 2021 got underway, Canada’s wealth management industry seemed to have shrugged off the pandemic disruption without much ado. Following a challenging first quarter of 2020, the mood at industry powerhouses–incumbent financial institutions, asset managers, and advice intermediaries–was buoyed by robust business flows and inflating market valuations in the ensuing months. Yet, beneath the industry headlines, the prevailing feeling was that the pandemic had unleashed the secular beasts of demographics, technology, and regulation–all collectively pushing for industry transformation. 2020 will be remembered as the year the innovation army took control–in some expected and in many unexpected ways. This session explores the nature of these changes and delivers a data-driven reflection about the expected shifts in the demand and supply sides of the Canadian wealth management business. The revolution is here

Blockchain: The Great Disruptor?
Blockchain technology is simplifying and streamlining processes related to commercial transactions and enterprise trust. In the process, it is disrupting the financial services industry as we know it. The digital assets space is evolving daily with new trends such as NFTs, DeFi, and smart contracts emerging. In this session, two experts explore the basics that industry professionals must understand–including what blockchain is and why you should care about it, cryptocurrencies as an asset class, and trends in fintech. You will hear about the two distinct ways of investing in distributed ledger technology: through venture capital investing in companies like Coinbase and BlockFi; and through liquid cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Learn why this non-correlated, asymmetric return asset class can benefit investors–especially in this uncertain global environment.

Direct Indexing: Coming Soon to a Firm Near You!
Direct index portfolios have historically been inefficient and too expensive operationally for the mass affluent or retail wealth markets. But innovations in custody and trading technology, portfolio optimization, and increasingly open data flows across industry platforms are taking direct indexing to the mass market. The past two years have seen Schwab, Fidelity, Vanguard, BlackRock, Morgan Stanley, Robinhood and others spend billions of dollars acquiring, building, and launching new direct indexing platforms and related technologies that support efficient portfolio customization products. Dozens of additional launches are anticipated in 2022. This session examines the benefits and opportunities of direct indexing–and what it is likely to look like in the Canadian market context, both in terms of solutions and adoption by Canadian investors.

Your Product is Your Platform
Demographic shifts are driving significant change in investor needs, expectations, and demands. A successful client relationship is no longer product centric. Increasing investor comfort with digital access to advice–combined with the desire for a more holistic view of “life-based” objectives–has led to an evolution in service platforms, with technology increasingly being deployed to enhance the client experience above and beyond specific product-related outcomes. Hear from a panel of experts as they provide their unique perspective on the future of wealth management platform delivery and how traditional product providers and manufacturers can continue to play a role going forward.
