NEW YORK, NY, October 13, 2020 – The Money Management Institute (MMI) announced today that Troy Thornton, Managing Director and Co-Head of U.S. Retail Distribution at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, has been awarded its prestigious 2020 MMI Leadership Award. His official recognition took place during the virtual MMI Annual Conference on Tuesday, October 13th.
“It is with great pleasure that we recognize Troy with this year’s MMI Leadership Award for all his hard work and dedication within the asset and wealth management industry,” said Craig Pfeiffer, President and CEO, MMI. “Known as the Pioneer Award before 2019, this recognition is now in its 23rd year, honoring a select group of individuals with visionary leadership and accomplishments that inspire their colleagues. Troy encompasses all of these qualities and has earned deserving respect across the industry.”
In addition to his many contributions with nearly 30 years of experience in our industry, Mr. Thornton was instrumental in the recent launch of MMI’s Social Justice Initiative Impacting Change. The Impacting Change programming actionably addresses social challenges with financial education, talent development and workplace culture.
Mr. Thornton is currently Co-Head of Retail Sales for the Goldman Sachs Asset Management Americas Client Business, where he has held several leadership roles in more than 20 years with the firm. Prior to his current position, he was head of key accounts and platform development, as well as national sales manager of the investment consulting group in U.S. third-party distribution. He also previously held various management positions in U.S. third-party distribution and U.S. institutional distribution, including co-head of the public funds group and head of registered investment advisor distribution.

Before Goldman Sachs, Mr. Thornton worked in asset management distribution for Federated Investors and Bankers Trust Global Investors. He is a member of the MMI Board of Governors and serves as chair elect. A member of the distribution council of the Investment Management Education Alliance, as well as the sales and marketing committee of the Investment Company Institute, Mr. Thornton also chairs the advisory board of the Pennsylvania State University Educational Equity Program.
