Thriving in a Post-DOL Rule World
While the Department of Labor Conflict of Interest Rule seems like a sudden game-changer, the reality is the move from commission-based to fee-based advice has been in full swing for nearly a decade. The growth of passive, alternatives, fixed-income and robo-advice are all predictable outcomes of a fee-based advice world. Our opening presentation will dive into these trends and look at what the past ten years portends for the future of asset management. While many emerging managers are already capitalizing on these product trends, your future success will be determined not only by your product line-up, but by how successfully you engage with the fiduciary advisor of the future.

The Lifecycle of an Asset Management Firm

According to many well documented studies, a business lifecycle normally goes through four stages – development, introduction, growth, and maturity. Each stage requires specific marketing and management decisions associated with costs, opportunities, and risks, and the decisions made at each inflection point are critical. This panel of experts from asset management firms at different points on the lifecycle timeline will give attendees a fuller understanding of each of the various developmental stages, the characteristics that define them, and the most important decisions to be made during each.

  • how to maximize their business at each stage,
  • the impact that utilizing the right – or the wrong – mix of tactics can have on the long-term success or failure of a business,

Shifting Economic Tides: What Lies Ahead Post-Election? 
In a wide ranging presentation, Paul Hoffmeister will discuss the impact of the upcoming U.S. elections on the financial markets and global economy. With November 8 poised to decide a new administration and possibly a change of control in the House and Senate, monetary, fiscal and regulatory policies will change next year – and much of what transpires will be dependent upon a few key players in Washington. Mr. Hoffmeister will give his views on who they are and what they want. Other topics he will cover include the looming shift in U.S. trade policy, whether 2017 will be the year of fiscal stimulus, and what history can tell us to expect next year. His assessment of likely post-election macroeconomic policy developments will provide a framework for forecasting stock, bond, commodity and forex markets in 2017.

Update on MMI Emerging Asset Managers Initiative

MMI launched an initiative late last year to build a vibrant community of emerging asset managers within the larger MMI organization. At that time, as you may recall, we asked you to participate in a brief survey to help us frame and prioritize our initial efforts in this area - and the results were revealing.

First, from a purely definitional standpoint, there was strong consensus that emerging asset managers are characterized by:

  • Less than $5 billion in AUM
  • Being new to retail distribution with limited sales resources
  • Having successfully placed retail product on a smaller scale and experiencing organic growth
  • Seeking to develop the next level of distribution relationships

Next, the survey results strongly reflected that emerging asset managers are looking for differentiated services and support tailored to their specific needs, including education and business intelligence resources, networking opportunities with their peers, and meaningful access to distribution firms. The respondents are also eager to learn "rules of the road" and hear best practices and success stories. 

Based largely on this input and feedback, plans for the Emerging Asset Managers Forum quickly came together, and we also wanted to share some other exciting updates:

  • Thought leadership resources - To share information and best practices around the challenges faced by emerging asset managers in the early stages of their development, we are in discussions with a number of subject matter experts to deliver a series of special reports and webinars.
  • Quantitative assessment/benchmarking tool - We have partnered with FUSE Research to develop and launch a unique benchmarking tool for emerging asset managers. To participate, simply respond to 14 initial questions in an extremely user-friendly survey tool by Friday, July 29th. Your individual responses, which will be held in strict confidence, will be combined with those of other respondents to produce an aggregate report and key findings. The results will allow you to benchmark your firm to your industry peers on such key metrics as staffing levels, distribution relationships, product capabilities, use of vendors, etc. For more information about participating in the survey, call (202) 822-4949.
